The Jassi Report Quiet News Day
Core Curriculum- Facts and Information
In this video Jassi is role playing being a news reporter. She is presenting the 6 o’clock news checks in with the clock and makes a comment that the news is late.
Understanding time and learning to read the time is a skill that Eliza had difficulty learning. Jassi introduces the concept of time and analogue clocks by referring to the time she is delivering the news.
She also makes a statement that the news is running late. Use this part of the video to bring attention to teaching the concept of time.
Jassi decides the news is too boring to give attention to it and doesn’t want to share with others what she is searching.
Often children with autism have difficulties with theory of mind just because Jassi thinks the news is not worthy of sharing doesn’t mean that everyone else will think the same way and in fact a lot of fans would want to know what she is looking at.
Jassi decides there is no news today and begins to shut down the segment.
Suddenly the phone rings this is unexpected and quiet loud. Often children with autism can find loud noises startling and even have over or underreactions to everyday noises. This is often referred to as having sensory processing differences which can impact on how a person responds to sensory processing experiences.
When sensory aspects of the environment impact on an individual’s ability to function this can become problematic and have a profound impact on the individual. Sensory processing challenges are part of the diagnistic criteria for autism spectrum disorders and fit under the core area of Repetitive and Restricted Behaviours.
Most children with autism have an unusual sensory processing profile and it is important to know that everyone has a sensory
profile and we are all different in how we react to stimuli in our environment.
Treatment is about management and making environmental adaptations to support access and participation in everyday experiences.
Jassi answers the phone and is pleased to report some breaking news. This introduces the concept of words that sound alike but have different meanings and spelling. English teachers and speech therapist would refer this to being called homophones. So you may have heard this at school.
For children with an autism spectrum difficulties with communication and auditory processing challenges often find language including words and the way one uses language confusing. Whilst many non -verbal children will gain full speech often those with autism will have challenges with how to use language this is often referred to as pragmatic language skills.
In summary this video introduces many curriculum areas that children with autism often find challenging due to the nature of having autism. This video can be used to introduce and initiate a range of skill developmental areas.
