Planet Jassi – Lets open the presents ! – Xmas 2020
Hi Superstars,
Well we finally made it through 2020 here is Jassi’s final episode of the year. In this episode Jassi gives The Captain his christmas present, the Jassi way.
Have you ever got a present that you don’t like , many kids with autism will often tell the giver that they don’t like their gift or don’t want it or to take it back, which can make gift giving and receiving difficult for kids with autism, not mention nan and pops reaction to what may seem an ungrateful child.
Has that ever happened to you? Find out what Jassi does when she gets her present from The Captain.

We have all been given presents that we don’t like learning how to control your emotions is part of good self regulation and emotional intelligence. Children with autism spectrum can learn how to manage their emotions and work out coping strategies to deal with challenging situations.
As teachers of our children gift giving and receiving presents at christmas time is a good opportunity for kids on the autism spectrum to be put out of their comfort zone and practice many of the skills they have been taught during their therapy sessions around emotional regulation training.
You wont always get it right but through exposure and experiences you can learn and develop your emotional intelligence.
Tip – to survive ” Lets Open the Presents ”
Often children with autism find the surprise element of not knowing what is in the wrapping very difficult. Surprises may not be a fun factor. In our family when Eliza was younger we would often have her involved in the wrapping of her gift that helped with her anxiety levels. We also had one present that would be a surprise and teach her strategies in gift receiving . We also had her involved in choosing gifts for others and explained that these are surprises for Nan, Pop and her cousins and aunties , uncles. We would always have a little giggle when she would help hand out the gifts telling them it was a surprise and what was in it.
A little birdy told me that this year Eliza had no part in taking on what her christmas gift is for 2020 , lets hope she can cope with a surprise!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year even in uncertain times.
