Parents and carers of autistic children often worry about their child’s restricted food intake. When Eliza was young she had a very restricted diet and was not open to trying new experiences including food. As Eliza became more open to learning new skills and trying new experiences this generalised into trying new foods. This has taken years and as an adult Eliza now enjoys food and going out to different cafes and restaurants. It starts by exposure and experiences. Remember food tastes and texture tolerances develop over time its a developmental process. Everyone has their own unique sensory profile and experiences the tastes and pleasure of food in their own way. That is why we have so many varieties of food to choose from.
