Episode 1. Sports Captain – Let’s Play Guess this Sport !
Hi Superstars ,
Do you like sports as much as The Captain? If so then this segment is just what you asked for. If not then maybe you should hang around and open your self up to a very new topic, you just might be surprised that learning new information can be fun. You could play this game with your family and friends have some fun along the way.
Now for those of you that have been following Planet Jassi then you will be aware that The Captain is Jassi’s good friend, Jassi doesn’t like sport but allows her friend to have his very own segment doing what he is good at and for The Captain that is he is very knowledgeable about Sport. We all have special talents and interests and that’ s what makes us special and unique. Imagine if everyone was exactly the same then the world would be very boring. The Captain would love to know what all you superstars shine at. You can let him know by writing in the comments below what’s your special talent/ interest.
Parent/Caregiver and professionals
You can use this segment to learn more about autism and how individuals on the spectrum are very unique. They are people just like you . Did you know that everyone has their own thoughts , opinions and respond in their own special way to sensory experiences. We refer to this as our sensory profile and no 2 people are exactly alike. However despite these differences some people especially those with autism may react adversely to specific stimuli if it affects them either hypo, or hyper sensitivity. Sometimes individuals with autism are unable to express themselves effectively due to communication challenges and parents/carers and professional have to be detectives and this can take time and lots of patience and understanding.
In this segment we put in a few curve balls that some individuals with autism may find distracting and/or uncomfortable like the thinking music to pass away time whilst one is figuring out the problem. This is to remind teachers especially in the classroom that too much noise can cause sensory overload or even discomfort to those with autism.
The Captain didn’t give a recap on the questions and verbally give his answers we did this to highlight that many children with autism have difficulties with reading and learning at school. By not recapping the questions we have not allowed processing time and for those with difficulties in working memory may have even forget what the clues were. We wrote the answers however many children with autism cannot read, so without help they will not be able to participate in this segment successfully and or independently.
The Team at Planet Jassi are passionate about supporting children with autism to learn and succeed in the classroom and hope this episode will highlight some important issues when educating and teaching kids in the classroom.
