Is forgetfulness a symptom of Autism? Lets have a look !
Individuals with autism have both specific difficulties with memory and memory strengths . Memory difficulty is not part of the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder but , it is a common difficulty experienced by many individuals with this diagnosis . For years researchers have been studying this. In 2006 a study by Minshew and colleague’s found that “children with autism have specific memory problems that may underlie aspects of autism”. This was mainly due to differences in spatial working memory and complex visual ,verbal memory may contribute to problems with social interaction , information processing.
An interesting finding was that the authors speculate that ” People with autism don’t have the automatic cross talk between brain systems – the reasoning and memory systems – that tells their brain what is most important to notice or how to organize it thematically”. This can impact on how an individual with autism remembers information that needs a cognitive organizing strategy to aid recall or if they had to detect such an organizing element in the information itself.
Poorer working memory for spatial information or remembering information overtime where something was located over time once it was out of sight.

By identifying differences in the way the brain is wired this can help understand why children with autism can be easily over whelmed by complex information in most everyday experiences because “if the brain doesn’t ,from the start ,automatically identify and store key information , that seriously impairs the capacity to interact, communicate and solve problems. Behaviour problems are often associated with differences in communication for which typical developing people can automatically notice and focus on what’s important or relevant. Autistic individuals tend to focus on details instead , or they cant recall or respond to what most people think is important.
More recent research ( 2017) Rabbiee and colleagues found that there was a link between working memory deficits and autism . Understanding these differences can have implications for future intervention and diagnosis.
