The Flamingo Watering Can-Take 2
Core Curriculum Area- Social Communication Skills and an example of Restricted Rpepetitive Behaviour.
Jassi and Gemma spend time together watering the garden. Gemma doesn’t have a Flamingo Watering Can soJassi let’s her friend use hers.
Jassi looks happy seeing her friend enjoying watering the garden. Gemma thinks Jassi is a good friend because she is sharing.
In this video we see examples of sharing, waiting, humour, joint attention and lots if non- verbal gesture like pointing.
In our everyday experiences we have multiple opportunities to practice social communication skills.
You may have noticed that Jassi had to wait for Gemma to count to 10 before she could start. This type of behaviour that requires the child to complete a set routine or ritual like counting to 10 before play is an example of a repetitive and restricted behaviour.
These behaviours can present subtly and may look quirky and if occurs regularly such as counting to 10 before starting a task it could be a symptom of Autism For example adhering to a set ritual before completing a task.
